Of the three Raptor Lake refresh processors we’ve got now, I have to say this one is the best. Slightly better temperatures, performance close to 13,900K, and a price of just over US$400. It’s great performance for your money. Performance can vary greatly across different media. This discrepancy stems from motherboard manufacturers and their PL1 vs. CPU configuration customizations.
However, using the motherboard’s default settings with optimizations turned on will also show higher CPU temperature. In any case, proper cooling is essential to handle these thermal spikes, which is a somewhat similar scenario for the higher-end Ryzen 7000 variants. The 14 Core series processors further strengthen Intel’s position in gaming performance. When examining CPU-bound resolution, Intel often has the performance advantage, competing closely with the 7000 X3D series. Performance differences are usually small, and not every user has a $1,000+ high-end graphics card where you can measure most of this difference. In fact, a larger percentage of users may be using a graphics card like the GeForce RTX 4060/4080 or RX 7600/7800 XT, as CPU performance becomes less important since the GPU has emerged as the primary limitation.
When considering moving to a completely new platform, total cost of ownership is an important factor. Although the price of DDR5 memory is expected to drop further next year. For Intel configurations, a minimum of 5200 MHz is recommended, but for both Intel and AMD, a 6000 MHz configuration may provide optimal performance.
The Core i7-14700K’s 125W TDP is a processor that’s allowed an impressive max of 253W (PL1+PL2), however, we see the PC moving towards closer to 400W under overall load, discounting the motherboard and GPU (GPU) from that value, and you’ll end up at 300 to 350 watts. This doesn’t mean the processor is running that wattage all the time, but for short periods of time when needed, the PC can draw that wattage, and yes, it’s a lot. In general, temperatures peak, but only for a short time. You can cool this processor with a premium heatpipe-based cooler, but we highly recommend using a proper integrated liquid cooling kit to start with.
Our processor stabilized at 80-90°C under a full 28-thread load, but with poor-quality LCS, we saw the value rise to 90-95°C.
As with all processors, you still have a little bit of overclocking ability. With proper liquid cooling (LCS kit with sufficient capacity), these temperatures are available.
We recommend the voltage regulated by the motherboard (automatic). For the Core i7-14700K, this seems to be in the 5900~6000MHz regions, and again these are all P cores.
This value is of course very impressive, as we have OCed the processing to 6000MHz (all P cores) and can run stable benchmarks.
